Mid-Planning

Well, here we are in the middle of the semester and well on our way to this project. So far for me there have been ups and downs. Our project started off very well and me and Rachel have had a great working partnership so far. I would have liked to been further along with my portion of the assignment and planning on working on inputting the lessons early this week, but sometimes the universe has different plans. On Monday of this week my laptop crashed and I had to do a system recovery essentially erasing everything on my c:drive (including all my computer programs and work for this class and my other two classes). My computer is running again, but needless to say, I am a bit behind in everything. But, oh well life happens and I am glad me and Rachel had a good start to this assignment to begin with.

At this point, we have outlined the basics of the lessons on teaching Michigan geography which includes:

  1. Andrea,

Sorry to hear about your computer crashing. I can imagine what that feels like, but I've only had close calls so far. You might want to invest in an external hard drive which would mitigate some of the major losses. They go for around $129. You must have meant to insert an outline for your lessons on this blog, but I don't see any text beneath the colon. I will wait to hear from you before grading this blog entry.

  2. Dr. Kumasi - Sorry I just saw your comment that for some reason the rest of my post did not get attached. Here was the rest of what I meant to write. I understand if I did not get points for this assignment. By the way I just purchased an external hard drive, I have learned my lesson about not backing files up :)

    Main Lessons:
•Using wallwisher to create a flexible KWL chart to be used throughout the lesson
•Creating a map of the classroom (powerpoint)
•Locating landmarks that are unique to Michigan (Google Maps)
•Planning a family trip through Michigan
•Finding out what caused the shape of Michigan and how it effect people who live in Michigan

As the classroom teacher I am going to work collaboratively on this unit with the LMS. I think that the LMS should take on the role of looking at the unit and trying to come up with different technologies that the classroom teacher can infuse in the lesson which will best instruct the students and also engage them in the unit.

To best reach our students from historically underrepresented groups we wish to present a variety of lessons that students will both be able to share their experiences about living in Michigan (creating a Michigan magazine and planning a trip for their families around Michigan) as well as learn about their state. I think that it is important for students to be able to take what they are learning and try to see how it connects to their own lives. During this unit we will provide opportunities to discuss how each of the students are connected to their state including the fact that many of our students are new residents to Michigan and may have been born in other countries.
